GOAL! The emphatic, almost tribal, bellow from every soccer (or futbol) announcer once the ball hits the back of the net. Wouldn’t it be great to stand up and yell that every time we meet or exceed one of our personal goals?
Well, there is nothing physically stopping you other than maybe some public embarrassment or inter-office snickering. Oh yeah, there’s that thing of actually achieving the goal too.
Why are goals so daunting and hard to achieve? To heck with the traditional, dare I say BS, New Year’s Resolutions? Let’s look at a few things that tend to prevent us from experiencing our milestones in general:
- Lofty Goals
Set High BUT Achievable Goals. Too often we shoot for the moon right of the gate, setting ourselves up for failure by choosing goals so high that our chances of achieving them are slim to none. Be realistic. Set your ultimate goal but also set a series of smaller goals that are more attainable to help build confidence and momentum.
- Scattered Focus
Tony Robbins said it perfectly, “Where focus goes energy flows.” You need to put all of your energy toward what you want or you’ll never get it. Whether it’s finances, health, friendships, or romance is irrelevant. We have a tendency to lose focus on what it is we want. Zero in on what you want and put everything secondary that doesn’t contribute to realizing it.
- Afraid to Change
If you do what you’ve always done you will get what you already have. Profound? Not really, but it is truly amazing how many people are dissatisfied with their current situation yet continue to do the same thing day in and day out. Isn’t this the very definition of insanity? If you want something different you have to change! Change how you make decisions. Change the people you associate with. Change your attitude. Change will liberate you!
- Blurred Vision
Daily incantations are crucial. Re-affirm to yourself every day what it is you want and who you want to be. Write it down, Say it out loud, and Repeat it over and over. Until you do this, what you want is not real. It’s an idea that will disappear. Make it real every day and soon it will become a reality.
There is nothing special or cosmic about these 4 concepts. It’s the simple things that tend to be most effective but it takes discipline and commitment to do the simple things every day!
