Omaha’s Ring Wars is incredibly happy to announce a night of action packed muay thai kickboxing to benefit Angels Among Us. Saturday, May 2nd the TipTop Ballroom will showcase local and regional athletes putting it all on the line in the ring to raise awareness and much needed support for the Angels Among Us non-profit charity. Doing anything from buying groceries to paying mortgages, the Angels Among Us organization has been a rock for families whose children are battling cancer.
For nearly 8 years, Angels Among Us has provided financial assistance, help and hope for families with children that are battling cancer. These are families whose needs cannot be overlooked. Since its founding in 2006, its volunteers and donors have helped more than 200 families with nearly a million dollars in support and services. AAU is first and foremost about the people it serves, their families and the Omaha community. Caring for a child with cancer is a full-time job that forces many families to give up an entire income to ensure that care. Many treatments available to children are categorizes as experimental and not covered by most insurance providers, creating a financial hardship and missed treatments. This is why AAU was formed!
Angels Among Us works with social workers at hospitals across the metro to identify families in financial need and will best benefit from assistance. Amazingly enough, the biggest support provided is simply paying monthly household bills on the family’s behalf.
Aside from financial support comes community support by hosting events at which families dealing with cancer can come together, befriend one another and develop a larger support network. Other events include charity fundraisers in which the families can enjoy some lighter moments and enjoy themselves. One such event will be Omaha’s Ring Wars.
From its inception Ring Wars has supported local charities by hosting amateur and professional Muay Thai kickboxing bouts with proceeds benefiting the charity. “We are extremely happy to have developed a partnership with Angels Among Us this time around,” explained Aaron Cerrone, promoter of the event. “Our gym, Mid-America Martial Arts, has had up-close and personal experiences with these kids and their families in the past year.” Referring to a kick-a-thon in which their gym raised near $8000 in one day for the family of Lexxus Crooks. “We’ve recently had one of our own students lose a child to cancer. It’s gut wrenching to watch it happen and no words can describe what those families go through. Angels Among Us just makes sense for us and we’re proud to be doing this event for them.”
100% of profits from the Ring Wars event will be donated directly to Angels Among Us. Cerrone urges “We have a goal of 10K. I think we can do it, all we need is everyone in the community to just come out, watch some fights, and have a good time…the rest should take care of itself.” Shari Hall, AAU Executive Director, “We love events like this [Ring Wars], it’s fun for everyone involved and for our families to get out and enjoy an evening.”
