Hey chocoholics! Have you ever wondered if chocolate causes acne?
Is this a trick or a treat?
When Halloween is over and you still have mounds (no pun intended!) of candy bars left over calling your name, go ahead and indulge a little because that statement is a trick! Scientific studies have shown little evidence that chocolate cause’s acne.
The real villain’s here are sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Sebum is a fatty/oily secretion that can sometimes be over produced in our pores. This condition is caused by things like genetics or hormones. When dead skin cells trap the sebum in the pore from being excreted it forms a plug. Bacteria then thrive and grow in this environment and irritate the blocked pore thus popping up as a lovely pimple. (Scream!)
All that said however, a diet consisting of high sugar and high fat can increase sebum production and promote inflammatory responses that can lead to acne. In other words, grab the dark chocolate candy bar over the white and milk chocolate bars. Dark chocolate is more pure and has less dairy, sugar, and other additives. It even has more chemicals that act as antioxidants which can benefit skin!
At Pura Vida we want you to have “boo-tiful” skin! We provide treatments and carry several products containing specific ingredients that treat acne prone skin. So treat yourself with some chocolate and let us treat your skin!
