As we look back on the previous year, we find ourselves reminiscing about moments that turned into memories, loved ones both come and gone, and a yearning to make this year better still.
What we need most cannot be found on any list and is not so easy to share. It is hidden away. Some might think that it is lost forever, but I don’t believe that.
It is still there.
Over the last few weeks, we have spent time with family and friends, traded presents here and there, eaten too much, and never asked ourselves “why” we did all of those things.
Was it because we needed to attend the holiday party for your spouse’s work? Were we asked to participate in a cookie exchange with 12 other women from church? Were the presents given (and received) meaningful or just something of a tradition every year?
Now that the chapter of 2015 has come to a close, I wonder how you will make 2016 any different than the beginning of any previous year gone by.
Seriously, look back at how you felt about 2015…2014…or any year and tell me that you have truly learned something new about yourself and shared that with the rest of us.
I bet you can’t do it.
Here is our dilemma…
We all want the same things, but are afraid to want them. What will people say? How will they react if I do something unorthodox and a little outside the box? Since when did we become so immune to the human spirit that we forget our own?
Life is busy and even chaotic at times. But life doesn’t mean anything if we just get through it – without noticing something different from the days before. Without taking those experiences and applying them to new beliefs, a choice of words, and different actions to take.
We cover our souls to protect them – to minimize the hurt caused by others. We are afraid to say words that express how we feel, what we want, and are truthful. We shy away from taking a stand because no one else is…we hold onto hate when forgiveness is the only way to move forward…we have missed chances because of a risk of failure.
“None of us becomes stronger unless we are given moments to use our strength.”
Digging deep and finding our soul is only the beginning…we must be willing to share our soul with the world in order for it to impact lives forever. Some of the bravest people I know were brave because they allowed their heart to speak for them – without any thought to popularity, acceptance, or fallout later. Their words were honest, heartfelt, and stirred emotion in every one of us who got to witness such bravery.
Why does seeing such a genuine feeling and honesty call to us in ways another sweater, book, or pair of socks won’t?
Because in that moments, we are real. We are exposed and vulnerable. We are unable to return to the shadows of our bodies – merely to pretend it didn’t happen. We can’t go back. And we know it.
That moment has become the catalyst for every moment that comes next. That single tiny tippy toe will someday become a more of a shuffle, then soon a whole step, then a long stride, and finally an enormous leap.
You see, showing me who you are isn’t so scary when I am showing you who I am.
Someone told me once. “No one talks like you talk.” She is right. I replied, “But people think like I think and what better way to get them to talk like they want than for someone to start the conversation.”
We each have a soul and there is no better time than the present to find it. Believe it or not, the world is depending on us being better, giving more, and not being afraid.
How do we find our souls?
- Stop following the rules of society – be An Army of One.
- Listen to and follow your heart – it is NEVER wrong.
- Give ourselves permission to feel – to be human.
- Find what brings you joy – pure happiness cannot be bought.
- Permit yourself to say what is in your heart – be 100% true to yourself for a change.
- Allow courage to overcome fear – let that adrenaline rush push you farther.
- Be willing to walk away – not everyone is ready when you are.
- Inspire others – your actions will have a positive effect on the world.
- Love who you are – don’t change for the world, let the world change for you.
- Dig deep – uncover who you really want to be and what you want.
Our souls are not lost. They have merely been in hibernation. It’s time to wake them and show the world how powerful they are. You need to uncover everything that makes you YOU – we are depending on your greatness to give us what we have been lacking. This responsibility does not fall on the few, but on us all. We each have an obligation to give away our gifts and talents to the world – theses perfect portions of ourselves are currently trapped within our buried souls.
Only when we stop being afraid, when we invoke true emotion do we begin to fall in love with the life we always wanted in the first place…the one full of hope, excitement, and promise.
You can do this! It starts today!
Make 2016 your BEST year ever.
